The European Commission has tightened the WLTP regime for new cars after claims that manufacturers were cheating tests to increase CO2 levels. The Commission has uncovered that carmakers were turning on functions during tests that increased emissions in the run-up to the introduction of the WLTP tests on 1 September last year, according to lobby group Transport and Environment.

On November 8, 2017, the European Commission (EC) published its regulatory proposal for post-2020 carbon dioxide (CO 2) targets for new passenger cars and light-commercial vehicles (vans). The proposed regulation would be the third set of mandatory vehicle CO 2 performance standards in the European Union (EU).

The European Commission will convert today’s (NEDC-based) CO2 targets to specific WLTP-CO2 targets of comparable stringency. These new WLTP targets will apply for monitoring car fleet compliance.
